I just ordered your book last night after reading just a few introductory words… I was almost in tears reading what you said about constantly being asked what race/nationality you are and no one ever guessing correctly. The fact that it is such an important issue to everyone else and their bombardment with constant questions before even asking my name is something I have carried with me all my years. Thank you so much for telling your story – I can’t wait to read it. Thank you for being a mother, wife, and having the determination to also have a successful career. It is setting such a wonderful example. You were one of the first women I followed on Twitter probably going on 4 years or so now… I just happened to stumble upon you and you have always remained professional and smart in so many ways. From one sis to another… I am proud of you and I wish you much success with your future endeavors.

All the best,
Rabea

Dear Rabea,

Thank you, kindly, for your words and for picking up my book! It’s satisfying to know you have been able to empathize and see yourself in the story (so far)! When you’re done, pass it on so that it may find its way to someone’s life that may, in turn, be inspired.

Identity is fluid, so be like water. No checkboxes!

Yours,

Hi Raquel,
I just wanted to let you know that I just picked up your book and I can’t seem to put it down. Bird of Paradise is a real page turner. I keep coming back to it and well now I am engrossed with the beginning details of your family’s DNA.
Thank you for writing this book.
I have been curious about my family in the Dominican Republic, and although I have lost contact with many of my relatives, I nevertheless have always had questions that in one way or another have pulled me back to review one memory or another.
Anyways, thanks again for a thoughtful and provocative book and look forward to more of your writing.
(By the way, my mother was born in the Dominican Republic (Moca specifically) and my father was a Sephardic Jew from Turkey)
take care,
Leah
