Loving “I’ll Take Care of U” by Jamie XX & Gil Scott-Heron & featuring boxer Nisa Rodriguez

I love this more because of the video’s storyline than the song itself: nineteen year-old boxer Nisa Rodriguez. She’s had quite an interesting life. And now, after a hiatus due to her pregnancy (and birth of son Emerson, also featured in the video), she’ll be making a comeback in Daily News 83rd Annual Golden Gloves finals in the 141 pound women’s division next Friday the 8th.

I also love boxing. I started back in January, initially to shed some of the love weight I gained during my first year of marriage in time for the summer. However, it quickly turned into something radically different. Where I tried to stay away from anything agressive in the past after surviving a, well, violent childhood and adolescence, I found boxing to be a spiritual exercise, a salve.  And it proved to to be a saving grace when I went to visit and interview my birth mother after not seeing her in fifteen years. I’m still processing the meeting and will write about it in my forthcoming book, i, Latina? In the meantime, still working on perfecting my right hook!
