He Co-Fathered Hip-Hop Culture, & Now DJ Kool Herc Needs Your Help

DJ Kool Herc, the hip-hop pioneer born Clive Campell, is putting yet another face on the national health care debate, or rather, how it continues to fail millions of Americans regardless of age or race. Health care, to put it frankly, is unaffordable for most Americans. And though DJ Kool Herc has made healthy contributions to hip-hop culture, here and abroad since the early 1970s, he hasn’t been able to benefit from the very society he’s enriched: hip-hop culture has become a multi-billion dollar industry and this country’s most resonant export. According to his website, DJ Kool Herc has suffered internal bleeding and intense pain caused by kidney stones. Additional surgery and other medical procedures will be needed to deal with these issues but because he is uninsured, “the health care system has treated him as it has many uninsured patients—using red tape and threats of prohibitive up-front payments to discourage him from seeking and obtaining the treatment he needs.”

All Americans deserve better health care options. However, until we realize this goal here is how we can help one of hip-hop’s earliest pioneer’s today. Contribute to the DJ Kool Herc Fund via Paypal or by sending a check payable to “Kool Herc” in care of the address listed below, which you can also find on the fund’s website:
