One of the most alarming practices in Japan over the last several years has been the surge in suicides. Japan’s suicide rate is one of the highest in the world: 2645 were recorded in January. Things will likely get worse, as unemployment is a leading cause of depression in Japan. The economy is spiraling downward and will only get worse in the years to come. Suicide is culturally accepted as an honorable way out of joblessness.
